Murmansk on the Arctic Ocean is the largest city in the Arctic and the most northern major city in Europe. Because of the location of the city on the slope along the Kola Peninsula and its large harbour system, the city is known as the Cape town of the North. Various research facilities are based in Murmansk. Murmansk is also the main base for the Russian North Sea Fleet.

The harbour at Murmansk remains ice-free throughout the Winter because of the branches of the Gulf Stream. The average annual temperature is around freezing point. Here in the cold North, there are now a total of ten SENNEBOGEN 835 Mobile units mainly used for heavy coal handling applications. The coal is transported by rail wagons from Kuzbass in the Kemerovo region. The wagons are quickly and economically unloaded by the SENNEBOGEN machines with 1.5 - 2.0 m³ clamshell. The coal is piled and then loaded into ships by the harbour cranes. The coal can be frozen up to 40 cm into the pile by the extreme temperatures in Winter. The clam-shell is equipped with special teeth to break through the frozen layers. An average of 4 to a maximum of 7 wagons are unloaded per hour.

The extended reach in combination with excellent load capacities were important criteria in making the decision for the SENNEBOGEN 835 machines. Equipped with a low-temperature package and various special equipment, the customer and operators of the machines are very pleased. The raising cab provides an optimal view into the wagons. At the request of the customer, all windows on the units were equipped with windshield wipers because of the stubborn coal dust. A powerful heater provides for comfortable climate and a relaxed working environment.
